After last week’s horrendous heatwave here in the UK, I have never been so happy as I am right now.
I have a wide range of fans, cooling gel mats and all manner of apparel to help keep me as cool as possible in the summer months. On top of all that, I already had three portable standalone air conditioning units, bought back in 2021. They were okay, but cumbersome, and each one had to be vented out of the window of whatever room they were in. They did the job, but they were not ideal.
As someone who is neurodivergent, I struggle massively with the heat and have extreme heat sensitivity, something I wrote about on my blog last year (you can read it here).
Why We Finally Made the Decision
When that first heatwave hit during the last week of May, I said to my husband Russ that enough was enough. We needed to invest in a proper air conditioning solution and have it properly installed. Russ sprang into action, researching different solutions and suppliers, and we settled on a multi split air conditioning system with Worcester Bosch units (Worcester Bosch air conditioning).
The Installation
The installation date was set for Monday of last week, and the supplier we engaged was absolutely brilliant. It should have taken three to four days, but in the end, it took six because of the second horrific heatwave that hit us. Our installer had to down tools and stop work at around 1pm to 2pm every day after that first Monday, because it was simply too hot for him to keep working safely beyond that point.
Despite the conditions, he worked his socks off all week and went well above and beyond what we expected. I genuinely cannot recommend him highly enough.
How It Feels Now
The installation was fully completed yesterday, and I am SO happy with it. It is already making a massive difference. Yes, the weather has cooled a little today, but for me it is still hot (I cannot cope when temperatures go above 20 to 22 degrees Celsius, and today it is sitting at 23). Even so, I had the best night’s sleep I have had in weeks. The system was not cheap, but it was a sensible and wise investment, especially given the direction UK summers seem to be heading.
Demand for air conditioning installations has spiked enormously, and I can absolutely believe it. UK houses and infrastructure are built to retain heat in the winter, which is brilliant in February, but that same insulation traps heat in the summer with nowhere for it to escape. With the kind of hot weather we are seeing year on year, a proper cooling system feels less like a luxury and more like a necessity for anyone who, like me, finds the heat genuinely unbearable.
The Worcester Bosch Units: 5 Stars – ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
The Worcester Bosch units are exactly what we hoped they would be. They are quiet, efficient, well designed and discreet. The temperature control is precise, and the difference between these and the old portable units I used to lug around the house is night and day. No more dragging hoses through windows, no more bulky boxes taking up half a room, no more compromise on which room actually gets cooled. Worcester Bosch is a name I already trusted from the heating side, and now I trust them just as much for cooling.
R Trevis Plumbing and Heating Ltd: 5 Stars – ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Robert Trevis at R Trevis Plumbing and Heating Ltd was the installer we engaged, and I genuinely cannot praise him highly enough. He worked through an extremely difficult week of hot weather, kept us informed every step of the way, took huge care with the installation and finished to an exceptional standard. He is Gas Safe registered (Gas Safe No. 620915, ID 218878) and is based in the West Midlands. If you are anywhere in the region and looking for someone reliable, skilled and genuinely lovely to deal with, I would point you straight at him. Please get in touch with me if you would like his contact details.
Final Thoughts
If you are someone who struggles with the heat, whether for neurodivergence reasons, health reasons or simply because you have had enough of British summers feeling like Mediterranean ones, I would really encourage you to look at a proper air conditioning installation. It is a significant investment, but for me it is already paying back in better sleep and far less daily distress. I only wish we had done it sooner.
