How to Prepare for Getting a Dog for the Very First Time

If you are getting a dog for the very first time, then you will probably have a lot to think about. You need to think about the cost of caring for them, the time it will take out of your day and even the financial responsibility too. That being said, bringing a dog home for the very first time can be an exciting experience to say the least and it also gives you the chance to strengthen that family bond.

Prepare Everyone

It’s so important that you talk about who is going to be responsible for walking the puppy when

they come home. You also need to find out who is going to handle the feeding too. Sure, the dog will need love and acceptance from every single family member but it helps to hand out certain responsibilities as this will help the dog to feel right at home.

Buying Everything you Need

This can be really fun. Go to your local pet store and buy everything that they might need. This can include bowls, a collar, food and even toys. It helps to check in with your local shelter too, so you can find out what diet your dog has been on. Remember that this is a huge change for them too, so the more you can keep things stable for them, the better. This will also help them to adjust, too.  If you want a high-quality pet food, then check out Forthglade.

Get a Vet

It’s so important that you find a vet that lives close to you. This will make it much easier for you to attend any appointments and it will also help you to get them vaccinated when they need it. If you can, it also helps to locate the closest 24-hour emergency hospital as well. When you find this number, write it down so you always have it when you need it. This will really come in handy and when you have a new pet, it can really put your mind at ease.

Gather your Dog’s Papers

If you are adopting your dog from a shelter then it can be hard for you to get your dog’s papers. Either way, you need to try and find out exactly which shots they have had and which ones they are going to need as well. It also helps to figure out the last time they had heartworm treatment and flea treatment too, as this will help you to give them the best possible chance at having a healthy life.

Puppy Proofing!

Every single dog will adjust to their new surroundings differently. There are however a few things that you can do to make sure that everything is ready for their new arrival. Move any chemicals to a very high shelf and also make sure that any electrical cords are taped to the wall. Food should be placed out of reach too, especially toxic treats such as chocolate. Dogs love the taste, but it is super poisonous to them so do keep that in mind.
