So, as Jeremy Clarkson would say, I did a thing. I bought myself a Chill Chair. And before you ask, yes, it is the most I have ever spent on an office chair in my entire life. Not even close. There was definitely a moment after I clicked “buy” where I sat staring at the order confirmation thinking “well, that just happened.” I may have closed the browser tab quite quickly, so I did not have to look at the total for too long. We have all been there, right?
When it arrived, I was genuinely excited. I could not wait to get it set up and start using it. But sadly, this is not the glowing five star review I expected to be writing. Sometimes things just do not work out, and I think it is important to be honest about that.
How I Found the Chill Chair
I should say that this was not an impulse purchase. Far from it. I spent hours researching office chairs. And I mean hours. I went down every rabbit hole you can imagine. Ergonomic chairs, gaming chairs, executive chairs, kneeling chairs, chairs with more adjustable settings than a NASA control panel. I read reviews, watched YouTube comparisons, browsed forums, and opened so many browser tabs that my laptop was practically begging for mercy. If there is a “best office chairs for people who sit at a desk for ridiculous hours” list out there, I have probably read it. Twice.
Then I came across the Chill Chair, and something about it immediately caught my attention. A proper office chair with a built-in massage function, cordless, zero gravity recline, and it actually looked professional enough to have on camera during client calls? It ticked every box I did not even know I had. But when I saw the price, I hesitated. I will not pretend I did not. I sat on the idea (no pun intended) for a few days, going back and forth. It was a lot of money, more than I had ever spent on a chair, and there was a sensible voice in my head telling me I could probably make do with something cheaper. Then my husband mentioned he had a 30% off discount code. That was the nudge I needed. Sometimes the universe just tells you it is time to treat yourself, and when a discount code lands in your lap at exactly the right moment, you do not argue with it. I took the plunge, placed the order, and waited with high expectations.
Why I Needed a Better Office Chair
Let me give you some context, because I think it matters. I work from home full time, and my days are not short. As a security awareness consultant, I am currently delivering programmes across multiple client engagements simultaneously. I also founded and run the AICSA (the AI and Cyber Security Association), I am working on my forthcoming book with Kogan Page, I run community events, I write content and social media strategies for clients, I prepare for speaking engagements and keynotes, and I manage award entries and judging commitments throughout the year. On top of all of that, I maintain several blogs and contribute to industry publications.
What that means in practical terms is that I am at my desk for extremely long stretches. We are talking ten, twelve, sometimes fourteen hour days. Back-to-back video calls in the morning. Strategy documents and research in the afternoon. Content writing and emails well into the evening. My desk is essentially my command centre, and I rarely leave it for more than a few minutes at a time during a working day.
My previous office chair was doing me no favours. After years of those kinds of hours, my back knew it. My shoulders knew it. My neck knew it. And if I am being really honest, my concentration and productivity knew it too. I needed something that would properly support the way I work, and I had such high hopes that the Chill Chair would be the answer.
First Impressions of the Chill Chair
Assembly was straightforward and took about five minutes with no tools required, which was a relief because I am far more confident dismantling a phishing campaign than I am assembling furniture. Everything was well packaged, the instructions were clear, and I was sitting in it within minutes of opening the box.
The first impression was promising. It looked smart and professional in my home office, and I went with the black colour option, which suited my setup nicely. The massage features were impressive on first use. Eight pre-programmed modes, a concealed control panel in the armrest, and a cordless lithium-ion battery so there were no trailing cables. On paper and in those first few minutes, it felt like everything I had been looking for.
Where it Went Wrong
Unfortunately, the longer I sat in the Chill Chair, the more apparent it became that this was not the right chair for me. And I desperately wanted it to be, more than anything.
After extended periods of sitting, which is the reality of my working day, I began to experience severe lower back pain. Not a mild ache or a bit of stiffness, but genuine, persistent pain that got progressively worse throughout the day. On top of that, I developed numbness in my tailbone area, which became incredibly uncomfortable and made it difficult to concentrate on my work. For someone who spends ten to fourteen hours a day at their desk, this was a serious problem. The whole point of investing in a premium chair was to improve my comfort and support my body through those long hours, not to make things worse.
I tried adding a lumbar support cushion to see if that would help. Sadly, it did not make a meaningful difference. The fundamental issue seemed to be the shape and support of the chair itself, and no amount of additional cushioning was going to resolve that for me.
I should be clear that this is very much a personal experience. I have read plenty of reviews from people who absolutely love this chair, and I do not doubt their experience for a moment. Bodies are different. What works brilliantly for one person can be completely wrong for another. This chair really is like Marmite: you either love it or you hate it. Unfortunately, I fell firmly into the latter camp, and after trying to persevere for as long as I could, I made the decision to send it back.
The Massage Features
I do want to give credit where it is due. The massage features themselves were genuinely impressive. The deep tissue rollers felt professional, the vibrating seat massage was a nice touch, and the zero gravity recline was undeniably relaxing for short bursts. If the chair had been comfortable for me to sit in for the kind of hours I work, I think the massage functionality would have been an absolute game changer. But a massage chair is only as good as the chair it is built into, and the seating comfort simply was not there for me during prolonged use.
Customer Service: an Absolute Credit to the Company
Now, here is where the story takes a much more positive turn, because I cannot write this review without acknowledging the Chill Chair customer service team.
From the moment I reached out to explain my experience, they were responsive, empathetic, understanding, and genuinely helpful. There was no pushback, no awkward questioning, and no making me feel like I was being difficult. They handled the return process smoothly and professionally, and their communication throughout was excellent. In a world where customer service so often feels like an afterthought, where you are passed from one automated system to another and left feeling like you are shouting into the void, the Chill Chair team were a breath of fresh air.
Good customer service is genuinely lacking in this day and age, and it is so refreshing when you come across a company that gets it right. Whatever my experience with the chair itself, I have nothing but praise for the people behind it. They clearly care about their customers, and that matters enormously.
The Bottom Line
This is not a chair I can recommend based on my own experience, but I want to be fair. I have seen plenty of glowing reviews from people who genuinely love it, and I think for some people it will be a fantastic purchase. There are quite a few reviews where people are saying the chair is not at all comfortable which is my experience, and I think the Chill Chair is a bit like Marmite – you either love it or hate it.
But if you work from home and you spend very long hours at your desk like I do, I would strongly encourage you to take advantage of the 30 day risk free trial and pay close attention to how your lower back and tailbone feels during those first few days. Do not ignore early signs of discomfort in the hope that you will adjust though, because in my case, it only got worse.
The search for my perfect office chair continues. But at least I now know exactly what I need, and that is something.
My Ratings
The chair itself: 1 out of 5 stars – ⭐
I really wanted to love it, but the severe lower back pain and tailbone numbness during extended use made it unsuitable for someone who works the kind of hours I do. A lumbar support cushion did not resolve the issue for me. For shorter sitting sessions, it might be a different story, but for a full working day it simply did not deliver for me.
Customer service: 5 out of 5 stars – ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Exceptional. Prompt, professional, genuinely caring, and they made the returns process as painless as possible. The team behind Chill Chair are an absolute credit to the company especially Customer Care Specialist Jemriel, who deserves a big shout out.

I recommend signing up to their mailing list and waiting for a good discount code to be available. In my case, it was a 30% flash sale code that my husband received.
