That comfortable, cosy armchair you have at home is something you might long to sit on, but when you’re stuck at the office, you need to make the most of the place that you occupy

Being stuck at a desk job often means that you are sitting in front of a screen for upwards of eight hours a day. It’s not comfortable for anybody to do that for any length of time, which is why there are always articles on how you can be more active when you work a desk job. You also need to work on making your actual desk as comfortable as possible.

Whatever you have to do to make your desk comfortable is important for you, because if you’re going to be there for 40 hours or more every week, then you can’t just slack on your own comfort. Let’s take a closer look at how you can make your desk a comfortable place to be.

  • Pick the right chair. We just talked about upgrading your chair, but if you’re spending a lot of time sitting down all day, the right chair can really make a big difference to a level of comfort. It’s not just about how many cushions the chair has stuck into it, but it’s about how high it is against the desk. You need to have lumbar support in your chair, and you also need to ensure that you have a chair that you can get up and down from easily. It should be adjustable both at the back and in its height. And if you don’t want to have a chair at all, you can always do away with it and go for a standing desk instead.
  • Check your keyboard. When was the last time you looked to see whether your keyboard was giving you the right support? It’s important that you support your wrists while you are typing, and if you’re typing a lot during the day then you need to have a product that allows you with ergonomic risk support while you’re typing. This will help you to keep your back and neck in alignment and ensure that you don’t end up with painful shoulders and painful muscles.

  • Think about using a headset. While we no longer seem to use the phone very much these days, in an office, you probably do still have a landline. Making sure that you have a headset so that you don’t have to keep holding the phone between your chin and your shoulder is going to help you with those muscle aches we talked about already. That kind of awkward position can really cause some long term neck pain, but it can all be avoided with the right headset with a button to be able to answer the phone instead.

  • Reducing your clutter. Lastly, you need to make your desk more comfortable by reducing the amount of clutter and rubbish you have on it. Paperwork should always have a place to be and you should ensure that you are keeping your desk tidy as much as possible.
