I’m very excited about the launch of Queer Voices, a vibrant new addition to Worcester’s cultural calendar 😁😁 Queer Voices is an open mic poetry and spoken word night celebrating LGBTQ+ and transgender creativity, expression, and community. The opening night will be on Thursday 24th July 2025, 7.00pm at Boston Tea Party, 18 Broad Street, Worcester.
This exciting new event promises a welcoming, inclusive, and empowering environment for LGBTQ+ and transgender voices of all ages and abilities. From seasoned poets to first-time performers, Queer Voices invites all to share their stories, passions, and truths.
“Worcester is full of queer poets,” says Melissa Poulton, Founder of Queer Voices. “Queer Voices will be a safe space where those from the LGBTQ+ and transgender communities can feel safe to express themselves and perform their words in a safe and supportive environment. Although queer people will be prioritised, Queer Voices is suitable for all ages and abilities. Boston Tea Party is thrilled to be hosting this new spoken word and poetry night.”
Although I am not a member of the LGBTQ+ and transgender community, my ex-wife Amy is transgender and some of my good friends are part of the community, so I am an ally to them. No-one should face harassment, being assaulted or discrimination for being LGBTQ+ or transgender. I stand with the community, and this new initiative for Worcester is so needed, it is vitally important that safe spaces exist for people to be themselves. Just yesterday I read that a member of the transgender community was subjected to verbal abuse as she walked back to her car after leaving an open mic night at Script Haven in Worcester City Centre and it made me SO angry. I will be performing my poem “I Am An Ally” and hopefully one or two others if I have time, and I’m very much looking forward to it.
If you would like to request an open mic slot in advance, send an email to Melissa Poulton via queervoicesworcester@gmail.com. With the support of Boston Tea Party, known for its welcoming atmosphere and strong community ethos, Queer Voices looks set to become a cornerstone of Worcester’s creative and queer-friendly spaces.
